Movement
Visual Brainstorm
Project Brief
The theme of my project is movement and i will be responding to this theme by using different techniques such as manual and digital zoom blur, using photoshop and stop motion videos. In this project, I will be researching into the following artists; Christopher O'Donnell, Ollie Larkin and Blu. I researched these artists through the internet. I am planning to use photoshop for editing, and also my tripod for stop motion videos. In order to experiment, i will have to do many examples to see which will be the best outcome. I am interested in creating a final piece which will be a well- flowing stop motion.
Photographers
Christopher O'DonnellIn this scene there are ghostly figures, which most look like tourists, just standing in a street looking around and talking. This piece is called 'Wall Of Heroes' which shows its in memorial which may explain the relevence of the ghostly figures.
The artist, i think, used the photoshop technique of adding in the people and using a blur effect and editing the figures to make them more see-through. I think the artists intentions were to represent the people as ghosts of the war from the memorial. |
Ollie LarkinIn this shot there is blurred lights on a motorway, these lights represent cars. This technique uses a very slow shutter speed to capture the movement of light by each cars tail lights and head lights. The difference between the red and white lights are the direction in which each car is driving. Larkin also uses a silhouette of the trees and buildings in the back ground to emphasise the main angle on the motorway.

BluThis stop motion named 'Muto' is by Blu and he has used a graffiti style to create a stop motion movie. He simply the street as a canvas for his artwork. His drawings are always evolving which creates a 'changing' effect and relates to the subject of movement. His work also has an element of 'weirdness' and this makes the movie unpredictable and enjoyable to watch.

Manual zoom blur
Process
1. For the best results its best to have a zoom lens with a reasonable variability in focal length, this will help increase the blur and be easier to control.
2. The hardest part of the overall effect is fine tuning the shutter speed, and it varies for each scene as there might a good light source which could over exposure your photo or the opposite, leading to an under exposure photo. So it is difficult to define one specific shutter speed, however it is not a huge problem with digital photography, because you can receive instant feedback of what the photograph is like on your LCD screen.
When shooting use the Shutter Priority mode for quick adjustments without the concern of the aperture and focus on the shutter speed.
3. The main concept of this technique is to expose for enough time so that the sensor or film can capture the blurred lines, and this is created by twisting the zoom out or in!
4. For these longer exposures preferably use a tripod to avoid wobbling the camera.
5. Try switching to manual focus and blurring the lights and then zooming while out of focus.:
6. Experiment with this technique and be creative with the long exposures. Try moving the camera ahile exposing and zooming in, and firing a flash to freeze a subject, use a slow sync flash for better results.
We did this also in previous lessons in the subject of shutter and aperture

Francesca Woodman
Francesca Woodman (April 3, 1958 – January 19, 1981) was an American photographerbest known for her black and white pictures featuring herself and female models. Many of her photographs show young women who are nude, blurred (due to movement and longexposure times), merging with their surroundings, or whose faces are obscured. Her work continues to be the subject of much critical acclaim and attention, years after she committed suicide at the age of 22.
First Response
Ghost Image
After exploring this type of movement in one single shot i decided to use many shots to create a stop motion movie. This form of movement is different from what i had done already so i want to go further into this form of movement.
stop motion video's

This Was my first response, so it was mostly an experiment. To make this stop motion i used imovie, I had a few problems at the beginning at figuring out how to create an stop motion on imovie, but soon I learnt how to use it. I took these pictures just in various parts of my school and overall i feel hat this response was successful for me.

|
As my Second response i tried to explore other ways to use transmissions. In this stop motion i used different locations in my house. To go from one place to another i found similar coloured objects and when I ended on one, i began on another. I also tried to move some objects to create a different form of movement.

|
As a contrast to the other stop motion movies i had created i tried to go for a different approach. I set my camera on a tripod and left it there in the same place while i took pictures of the beans moving around. I didn't like the look of this one as much as my previous stop motions because i liked the idea of actually moving around.

In this response, I took pictures of my journey to Spain and back. In this stop motion there are various different forms of movement. I combined walking around, driving and keeping the camera stationery. I feel this was the most successful stop motion movie out of all of my motion videos. It had all the combined factors that i like.

|
Here, in this motion video i experimented in combining light painting and stop motion to create a movie. My group and I expirienced a few difficulties in creating this stop motion movie as every time a picture didn't come out we had to repeat it. I found that this video was a success and i really enjoyed making it so i feel that i should develop this idea further.

Developing My Project
Looking back on my project, I really enjoyed the work of Ollie Larkin where he set a long exposure on his camera and took a picture in an environment with lots of moving lights at night. It creates an image with some long, coloured lines and streaks to form an interesting image. I want to explore more into his work and try to create some responses of my own.

My Response
In this response i tried to recreate this picture from above by Ollie Larkin. I soon realised that i did not have the right conditions for this photo to take place succesfully. Instead I came up with a few faded streaks from cars and busses. So then I decided to go a different way in trying to create light streaks. I got a lighter and set my camera's shutter speed to bulb and used a lighter to create a path of light. I really liked these pictures from the second try and may develop this idea more.

Light Painting artists
Chanette Manso
Chanette is best known for her light painting work that focuses on the human form. Chanette uses a variety of lights to create beautiful images of dancers, Indian icons, balancing acts, and more. In this picture she uses simple objects such as bins to create a futuristic look. I want to look into doing work like this. |
|
Freddie Wong
here In this stop motion, Freddie Wong uses light painting to draw and animate objects. This is a good link between Light painting and stop motion movie. He uses different colors to illustrate different weapons and action movements. I would really like to recreate a movie like this one and i feel i should try and make a response to this video. |
|
Light Graffiti Stop Motion
here is another light painting stop motion movie that really interests me. This stop motion was made in a house so it's a simple but creative idea. I might try to do something in my house or maybe outside. |
First Response
|
Here was my response to Freddie Wong's 'Light Warfare'. I tried to recreate the sense of movement of light that Freddie had. This response i felt was successful as the video flowed well together and the light exposure worked well. This stop motion was also similar to the one I did earlier in the 'Stop Motion' section of my Movement project.

Here, i tried to do another light painting stop motion and i found this to be the most successful as it flows pretty well at the beginning. I did find some difficulties in the making as every time there was a mistake i had to redo the picture which then put me off track. however, in the long run, this attempt was the most flowy process compared to the other stop motions.
|
Planning My Final ResponseFor my Final Response I want to do another stop motion movie. For this movie i want the theme of warfare, similar to Freddie Wong's video of light warfare. So, I think i will try to recreate his video with my own twist to it. For this stop motion, i"ll try to make it longer than my previous stop motion 'Light Painting Ball throw'.

My responseThis was my response to Freddie Wong's 'Light Warfare'. I feel that this attempt was not that successful as it was shorter than i expected. It also did not flow how i wanted it to as my camera was a bit jittery. I did have fun with this attempt, however i feel i want to try this one more time but without the light painting.
