My London
Project Brief
The theme of my project is Derelict London and i will be responding to this theme by visiting many different derelict and abandoned sites. In this project, I will be researching into the following artists : Eugene Richards 'The Blue Room', Nadav Kanders 'Chernobyl', Tim Rudmans 'Derelict West Pier' and many of Mark Blundell's photos. I will research using different sources such as the internet, the library and exhibitions. I am planning to visit the Derelict Tube station in Highgate, London. In order to experiment, i will have to get many different pictures in the abandoned station.
Coldfall Wood - Response 1
In my first experimental shoot I went to a graveyard, forest type place whilst it was snowing. I took pictures of the trees, paths and found a derelict, overgrown car.
My favourite shotMy favorite shot was of the derelict car which had overgrown plants, it had an eery kind of look, and i liked the mystery of how it got there and the story behind it. For this picture I used the online pixlr photo editor, and put this blue - orange filter on it to try and outline the silhouette of the snow covered car. When i first decided to come to this forest, I wasn't aware of how much snow there would be so i faced some difficulties in getting a good shot of the shape of the derelict car.

This Is Richard Duck's 'Abandoned Car'. My shot is similar to this one as, of course, it has a derelict, rusty, overgrown car. But other than that, the environment is rather similar as its a muddy, grassy area. I would have preferred to have had my shot when there wasn't any snow at all so i could have captured the background more as it did in this shot.

This shot was similar to Eugene Richards project 'The blue room', especially his photo of a snowy field of derelict cars. Here, Eugene uses cars as the central view point of his picture. Unlike my picture, he uses many different snow covered cars, he makes the cars more clearer to see than my one car as mine is almost completely covered in snow. This picture also inspired me to broaden my choice on other derelict sites such as the shack in the back ground of this picture.

This shot was also similar to Nadav Kanders Chernobyl project. Here, Nadav Kanders uses a derelict and old childrens slide in an overgrown forest. This shot is similar to mine as both pictures were taken in a forest and the both shots are slightly desaturated. This picture also showed me how i can experiment more with maybe old, overgrown objects or buildings.

After my first experiment i found that i should move onto something bigger and less hidden for my second response. I have decided to go for a derelict building or site for my second shoot. I found that I really enjoyed taking shots of mysterious, left behind areas and I want to go further into derelict sites.
Places I might go for my second response - derelictlondon.com
Battersea Power Station
Silvertown - Milenium Mills
Abandoned Highgate Train station - chosen site
Abandoned Highgate Station - Response 2
I like These pictures because of the filter i put them though called 'Aladin'. It gives them a dark, grungy look which reflects on the derelict site. I decided to choose this site because it is quite close to my area, and also I spent a lot of my childhood in highgate. I found it very interesting that almost everyday i went to school i passed this old station but never noticed it, it was always hidden in plain view, so this made me want to explore it further.
My favorite shotMy favorite shot was the barred up tube tunnel, the black, shadowy tunnel behind the board creates an eery mystery of what could lie behind. This picture creates an almost fish-eye look as the illusion of the tunnel makes the picture look blown up. As in many of my other shots, I really like the graffiti everywhere, it just shows that this site was never really forgotten, just left behind.

Mark Blundell's shot 'in triplicate' reminds me of my shot. We have the same idea with the graffiti taking over the site which has been left behind, but is still occasionally visited. However, our pictures our different in a way that Blundell's is a bit more bright and open, as in contrast to mine which looks more closed up and dark.

This picture 'Abandoned Berlin' is very similar to my shot. They both resemble places that could have once been visited a lot, but after a while they were left to be graffiti'd. This shot also has high contrast like mine, and a more grungy look than Mark Blundell's 'In Triplicate'. This shot is also similar in a way that your looking from an outside view into something that you can'y quite clearly see what the whole picture could be.

After This response, I really liked the sort of man made ageing created in these shots because of the graffiti , but as a contrast, for my next shoot I have decided to go for a more over grown, natural ageing untouched site.
Abandoned Coppets Wood Hospital - Response 3
I like these pictures because they are slightly different from my previous shoot which had a slightly yellow tinge to them, instead I put a high contrast and a low brightness on these pictures.
This shot is similar to mine because they are both grungy looking buildings. The filter on this shot is a bit different to mine, however it still resembles to my shot. Both derelict buildings are almost untouched by graffiti or damage by people, its just mostly nature taking over the buildings slowly.

This was my last response, and you can see the changes of my project throughout my different responses.
